Career Coaching

I spent quit a bit of time preparing for my coaching session. I completed an update of my resume (which always seems to be in flux) and spent quite a bit of time trying to define a career goal that felt accurate and had some emotional valence. It's still more generic than I would have preferred, but I find that I seek a lifestyle more than a position. The job function matters not so much to me as how I feel doing it -- I wish to be in a role with significant impact but maintain considerable control over my time and location. I also believe I'm most likely to get there by leveraging what I do well, rather than trying to make a career improving on my weaknesses.

I sent my resume and goal statement to Ms. Liao and heard back from her almost immediately. We set up our counselling session for the following night. Teresa begin with an overview of her experience and then we focused the next 3/4 hour on my resume. She has useful suggestions and insights and encouraged my to reduce the length to a single page and reconfigure the sections and contents.

I made these changes and Ms. Liao very generously agreed to review my resume a second time. She also recommended a training session in East Palo Alto as a good enrichment activity.

In all, this was a useful exercise, but to derive the most value out of coaching the sessions need to be ongoing.
